Are galvanized pipes safe for drinking water?
Are galvanized pipes safe for drinking water?

Everyone should know that the most commonly used tap water pipes in households are PPR pipes, and a small number of people use stainless steel pipes or copper pipes. But, almost all ordinary people's families use PPR pipes. Now a friend asked such a question: Do domestic tap water pipes still use galvanized pipes? Why? The first answer is that it is no longer allowed.

1. The reason why galvanized pipes cannot be used for tap water pipes

Around 2000, clear requirements were made for galvanized pipes, prohibiting the use of galvanized pipes as domestic drinking water pipes. So since then, galvanized pipes have no longer been used for tap water pipes.

This is mainly because the inner and outer layers of galvanized pipes are galvanized. After the galvanized layer is damaged, water comes into direct contact with the iron pipe, and this ordinary iron pipe is very easy to rust. This phenomenon is elementary to see, that is, after the tap water pipes at home have not been used for a long time if they are opened, the water that flows out is a kind of red water with rust. This means that the rust in the pipe is very serious. At the same time, it can also be judged that there are some galvanized pipes in the pipes of your community, which must be an old community.

Combining the above two factors: the first point is that galvanized pipes are particularly easy to rust, and there will be a lot of rust after rusting. Another point is that it is particularly easy to breed bacteria after rusting. Therefore, the country has banned the use of such ordinary galvanized pipes on domestic water pipes. Finally, as we see, galvanized pipes are prohibited from being used on tap water.

2. Analysis of the application of tap water pipes at the current stage

Generally speaking, tap water at home comes from water plants, and the water in water plants generally comes from rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. The water in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs enters the water plant, and after a series of sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection, the water is pumped into the pipes through water pumps, and then transported to each community through pipes, and then to each home.

Therefore, the tap water pipe mainly includes three parts: the first part is the part of the pipe from the water plant to our community. The second part is the part of the pipe from the community to the water and heating pipe well in the building. The third part is the part of the pipeline that goes from the water well to the indoors.

The first part is the commonly used pipelines in the municipal water network. There are mainly the following types: the first and most commonly used is ductile iron pipe, and the second is PE pipe.

The requirements of each region in the second part are different, mainly as follows: the first and most commonly used ductile iron pipe. The second is PE pipe. The third is plastic-lined pipe.

The third part is the part of the pipeline from the pipe well to the indoor. It can be said that almost all of them use PPR pipes, and other forms of water pipes rarely appear.

3. Introduction to the latest tap water pipes

It may be because the previous ductile iron pipes are also easy to rust, so now there are some new types of tap water pipes. These pipes are also mainly used in public areas, not in our homes.

The first is a composite pipe with enamel on the inner wall. This pipe is based on the galvanized pipe, and the inner wall of the pipe is enameled with a layer of porcelain. This pipe is the best from a hygienic point of view. Because everyone has seen porcelain, and the dishes in our house are basically porcelain, so it meets the hygienic standards.

The second type is the plastic-lined steel pipe. This type of pipe is also based on the ordinary galvanized pipe, and a layer of plastic is coated on the inner wall of the pipe. This plastic fits tightly to the inner wall of the pipe. This prevents direct contact between water and the inner wall of the pipe. It is equivalent to our PPR pipe.

4. Some knowledge about choosing tap water pipes in the home

First, when choosing tap water pipes for home use, I recommend that you choose the most commonly used PPR pipe water pipes. At present, this type of PPR pipe is convenient for construction, second, its quality is very reliable, and third, its price is acceptable.

Second, I recommend that when choosing tap water pipes for home use, you must choose some well-known brands of pipes, and never choose some unknown brands or even unbranded pipes.
