Characteristics of ERW steel pipe:

Straight seam electric resistance welded steel pipe (ERW) and spiral submerged arc welded steel pipe (SSAW) can better meet the requirements of oil and natural gas pipelines. For steel pipes below medium diameter (Ф630mm), most foreign countries use ERW steel pipes, and spiral submerged arc welded pipes are generally only used for low-pressure fluid transportation, civil buildings, structures, and piling pipes. At present, my country mainly uses SSAW steel pipes for such long-distance pipelines. This is mainly because my country did not have ERW steel pipes at the beginning, so the types of steel pipes selected for design were limited; secondly, it is related to the understanding of ERW steel pipes. However, the widespread application of medium-diameter ERW steel pipes, especially the successful use on submarine pipelines, has fully demonstrated the advantages of ERW steel pipes. The promotion of the use of ERW steel pipes on medium-diameter oil and gas pipelines in my country is a future development trend.

Electric-resistance-welded steel pipes are referred to as ERW steel pipes, which have many advantages such as high productivity, low cost, high dimensional accuracy, and beautiful appearance. In recent years, countries have been actively studying the use of ERW steel pipes to replace seamless steel pipes and spiral-welded steel pipes. In industrially developed countries, the proportion of ERW steel pipes with a diameter below 610 mm has reached about 70%. In the past, due to the poor reliability of the weld, the scope of use was greatly limited. In the past 10 years, with the improvement of production technology and the continuous improvement of product quality, the weld quality of ERW steel pipes has been comparable to that of UOE steel pipes. Therefore, it is widely used in oil and gas pipelines in different regions and harsh conditions.

1. Characteristics of ERW steel pipes

(1) Research on the welding mechanism of ERW steel pipes has achieved gratifying results, the welding process has been optimized based on theory, and all optimization parameters have been computer-controlled to improve the weld quality.

(2) Fluorescent line positioning technology is used for weld annealing, so that annealing is strictly carried out in the specified position, thereby further improving the weld quality.

(3) The ductile-brittle turning temperature FATT value of the weld zone of early ERW steel pipes is much higher than that of the parent material, with a difference of 40-50 degrees. Due to the progress of metallurgical technology, the FATT value of the welded pipe base material can be as low as about -70-80 degrees, so that even if there is a certain difference between the two, it can still meet the user's requirements.

(4) Due to the application of automation and ultrasonic detection technology, ultrasonic automatic tracking online detection can be realized, thereby further reducing the probability of defects in the weld due to missed detection.
